MAPFRE Euromed International Championships 2015 - Day 1

The MAPFRE Euromed International Championships 2015 got under way yesterday with perfect sailing winds enabling four races to be sailed. Mellieha Bay makes the perfect location and backdrop for such a sailing event, and just seeing all the little white sails scattered all over the bay is a memorable picture in itself.

This year's championship has attracted the biggest fleet ever to participate in a sailing competition here in Malta. With 231 boats launched (information from the Facebook Euromed International Championship page) it was quite a feat in itself co-ordinating launching the various teams together with the support and rescue boats. The whole event takes months of organisation and it is thanks to the tireless team working behind the scenes year in year out that the Euromed is such a success and has grown to this proportion.   MAPFRE MIDDLESEA have been a major support in the Maltese sailing world this year and having them 'on board' for the Euromed 2015 must be a very welcome boost to the overall organisation.

The Maltese team got off to a good start with excellent overall results. Provisional results for the various classes are:

Optimist Overall: 1st Richard Schultheis (MLT), 2nd Antonia Schultheis (MLT), 3rd Craig Farrugia Vella (MLT)

Optimist Cadet:    1st Richard Schultheis (MLT), 2nd Marco Gradoni (ITA), 3rd Daniel Cante (SLO)

Laser Radial:        1st Loghlen Richard (NYC), 2nd Justin Busuttil (MLT), 3rd Thomas Bonello Ghio (MT)

Laser 4.7:              1st Zachary Zammit (MLT), 2nd Andrea Parrinello (ITA), 3rd Matilda Nichols (GBR).
