Malta Young Sailors Making an Impression, once again, Overseas

Members of the Malta Young Sailors Club have recently been active, once again, racing overseas and achieving some excellent results.
Back in June Richard and Victoria Schultheis took part in the Zlato Sidro Regatta in Izola, Slovenia. This event was actually a qualifier for the Slovenian choice of sailors taking part in the Optimist European and World Championships. From a fleet of around 80 young sailors Richard achieved a remarkable overall 1st placing with Victoria coming in 8th overall and 2nd girl. One has to keep in mind that the overall result in these fleets is a combination of all classes - therefore girls, boys and cadets are bunched together in one class. Over and above the overall placing the boys, girls and cadets are then divided into their different relevant classes.

Following on from Slovenia came the Nieuwpoortweek in Belgium. This is a popular International Sailing Week with a very high standard of sailing as it attracts sailors from all over the world. This year there were 100 competitors from 10 countries. There were 8 classes of dinghies with the Optimist class being the biggest.  Richard, Antonia and Victoria Schultheis were selected to race in the Gold fleet - the most competitive fleet. 7 races were sailed with one discard. Final overall results for the Maltese team were:

Victoria Schultheis (MLT201) - 8th overall and 2nd girl. Victoria kept a pretty constant placing throughout with her best positions over the line in 3rd and 7th place.

Antonia Schultheis (MLT202)  - 48th overall and 15th girl. Antonia had 3 good races with a 5th, 12th and 24th placing over the line but a DNF set her back a bit in the overall placing.

Richard Schultheis (MLT205) - 16th overall. Richard had 3 excellent races gaining a 1st and two 2nds. Great results. He had a couple of placings further back in the fleet giving him an overall of 16th place.

There are more international regattas coming up in which various members of the Young Sailors Club will be participating.
There is a regatta in Greece in which the team going to the World Championships in Poland will be participating.
