Yesterday was the RMSR coastal race which is, basically, a warm up race before the big start on Saturday morning. The wind was perfect sailing weather with a nice stiff southerly breeze in the 20/25knot range. The course took them out of Marsamxett Harbour and along the East coast of Malta, round Comino and back up to Marsamxett.
First over the line, and overall winner, was a Cookson 50 ''Mascalzone Latino'' owned by Vincenzo Onorato. The tactician on board is the experienced America's Cup and Volvo Ocean racer Ian Moore. This shows the high calibre of sailor that this event attracts.
Dave Latham's ''Seawolf of Southampton'' is back again this year (I have now lost count as to how many RMSR he has actually taken part in!). Dave always manages a good result in the coastal race and this year is no different with a first in his class.
Other class winners were Andrew Howard's ''Belladonna'' and Anatolii Schurenkov's ''Knyaz''.
It is interesting to see the list of entrants. There are around 11/12 entries from Russia and quite a few from various Eastern European countries. It is truly an international event with participants hailing from various parts of the globe as far and wide as Australia, America and all over Europe.
Pictures below were taken at the start of the Coastal Race yesterday. Of particular note is the 3rd photograph which I just love for obvious reasons. The effect of the reflection on the hull is brilliant. Well done to photographer Samuel Scicluna. You can visit his facebook page on this LINK
