B2 Overall Winner of 2013 Rolex Middle Sea Race

Pic: Kurt Arrigo for Rolex

The IRC TP52 has just been named as this year's overall winner for the Rolex Middle Sea Race.
Owned by Michele Galli, with Francesco de Angelia (of America's Cup fame) as its tactition, the Italians managed to bring the trophy back into the hands of an Italian team. The first time since 2005.

Meanwhile, Oiltanking JUNO was first Maltese boat back and probably 1st in Class 3 closely followed by XP-ACT.

ARTIE-FX have had a very disappointing race and are still quite a few miles away past Lampedusa on their way to Malta. OTRA VEZ sailed through the Comino Channel a short while ago and is heading for the finish line - she may make 3rd in class 4.........but one cannot confirm yet.

Below are some shots I took up at the channel as some of the yachts came through.

RMSR 2013 - First Boats In

The first boats are in after a pretty light wind edition of the Middle Sea Race this year. First boat in was the German Maxi ''Morning Glory'' which led the fleet all the way thus claiming line honours. Next boats in were Alegre and Robertissima III.
Quite a few of the larger boats have now finshed and the smaller members of the fleet are on their way to Lampedusa.

First Maltese boat ahead right now is Juno closely followed by Otra Vez, though Otra Vez is ahead on handicap.

Unfortunately ARTIE, one of the hot favourites, did not manage to get out of the windless hole early enough to be up amongst the front runners of their class and are only just passing by Pantelleria as I type. That's racing!

The rest of the fleet are expected to finish within the next 24/36 hours.

Very Sad Report about the Pacific Ocean post Tsunami

I have just read a very depressing report about a sailor's journey across the Pacific Ocean - a journey he has made several times and what he has noticed and come across since the tsunami in Japan. Very depressing and worrying. Read it on this link:

Rolex Middle Sea Race 2013 - The Race So Far

36 hours into the race and the fleet have all made great progress ...............until now! They rounded Stromboli and have now got stuck in a windless hole causing the rest of the fleet to catch up. It looks a bit like a start line on the TRACKER. The large boats are well ahead and the leading boat, MORNING GLORY, has now rounded Favignana and has caught the good bit of wind there is off the Western coast of Sicily. Unless the wind picks up off the North coast of Sicily within the next few hours I suspect it will be the big boats claiming the top prize.
It is interesting to note that the only classic yacht taking part, INFANTA, has been amongst the leaders at each check point so far and was actually 1st overall passing through Messina. A beautiful graceful boat built in 1947 - it was lovely to see the Skipper wearing the traditional blazer and cap and the crew wearing white boiler suits on the start. A picture of this can be seen on my previous blog post.

Rolex Middle Sea Race 2013 - The Start

This morning saw the start of the 2013 edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race.
This year I was fortunate enough to be able to get really close to the action on a RIB so it was really exciting. The weather was perfect and wind was a south easterly direction - light to moderate which made it ideal for spectators on boats to be able to be part of it all. Below are just a couple of the 900 odd pics I took - I found out it is not so easy keeping a steady hand on a moving RIB!

As I type the last of the fleet has just passed Capo Passero so they are doing pretty well time wise. The leader, MORNING GLORY, is heading for the Straits of Messina with a present boat speed of 11.9knots, and should be sailing through them some time tonight.

ARTIE, the favourite Maltese yacht which won the 2011 edition of the race, is about a third of the way up the East coast of Sicily - as are the majority of the fleet. Their boat speed right now is 8.4knots -  so they must have a pleasant breeze up there which is a big improvement from last year's windless race at this point.

Autumn Winds

Had a great afternoon yesterday with a strong WNW'ly wind. Went down to get a couple of hours in earlier on and was very comfortable on my Evo 81L with Tush Rock 4.2m. Had my windsurf and the wind really picked up strong and the guys changed down to 4's and I had a couple of hours of more fun behind the camera.

Once again it's that time of year when the tension and excitement starts building up to a climax just days before the start of the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Most of the competing yachts are already here by now and last minute preparations are in hand. The coastal race will be taking place on Wednesday which should be very exciting since gale force winds are forecast.

Early Morning Exercise for the Day

The best way to start the day. An hour's walk across the bay and beyond.........

.........a quick paddle along the sandy beach

.....and finish off with a refreshing swim.
