Does This Mean the End of our Awful Winter at Last?

We have had the wettest and coldest winter I can remember. We have had this type of weather lasting a week or maybe two but for over 2 months ?? Yesterday and today we have had the perfect weather. Lovely clear blue skies, warm, clear air, the island looking lusciously green (ok I know it would not be so green if it was not for the volumes of rain we have had). All the ''inglizi' (a wild yellow flower) looking almost fluorescent in colour carpeting our hillsides. Bliss........Spring is in the air and Summer is not far behind.  for quality Gozo Farmhouse accommodation

Ben & Seb Training Hard

The following was taken off Malta 49er Olympic Campaign Facebook page. Best of luck to Seb & Ben.
Malta49er: Intensive Training underway in Palma to qualify Malta for The 2012 Olympics

The Malta49er team, Benji Borg and Seb Ripard have left Malta for Palma, Majorca for the next few weeks to undertake intensive training and sparring with other national 49er teams prior to the Olympic qualifiers in Croatia in May. Following an injury sustained to Borg’s knee whilst competing in ...Italy last year, the winter was spent getting Borg rested and then back on form again, training in Malta with their coaches: German ex-national team coach Kolja Volkers, and ex-Olympian, Max Groy.
The ISAF 49er World Championship in Zadar, Croatia presents the two young sailors with their chance to qualify for and represent Malta in the 49er sailing class at the 2012 Olympic Games. Unfortunately, the pair missed the first Olympic qualification event in Perth, Australia in December: Due to Borg’s injury, they were forced to pull out of the event.
Now back at peak fitness levels, Malta49er are making the most of their time in Palma where several other national teams are basing themselves for the rest of the winter. Teams who have already qualified for London, such as the Danes, Germans, Polish and Swedes will be in Palma alongside Seb and Benji, as well as teams from Italy, Canada, Belgium, Chile and Bermuda who will be head to head with them on the starting line in Croatia battling it out for a place at the Olympics. There are 5 national places left, after 15 nations secured their entry in Australia.
The programme in Palma concentrates on high intensity boat handling and speed techniques with both coaches, and training with the German, Belgian, Danish and Swedish teams. In early March, they are scheduled to undertake two-boat training with the Germans as sparring partners, and mid-March sees them competing in a test regatta, where they’ll find out for the first time in 2012 where they lie in the pecking order.
Still in Palma 3-8 April, they will be competing in the Trofeo S.A.R. Princess Sofia Regatta against the best with many nations, utilizing the regatta as trial event for their Olympic teams. This is the final race prior to The 49er World Championship Olympic Qualifiers that will take place between 6th and 13th of May in Croatia.
Although Malta is a small nation aiming to compete with the big-guns in the sailing world, Malta49er Coach, Kolja Volkers is confident that Seb and Benji can achieve their immediate goal and be the first sailors ever to qualify to represent Malta at The Olympic Games.
The Malta 49er Olympic Campaign has been facilitated by EC English Language Centres; Cisk Excel, Malta’s first low carbohydrate beer; The Creative Partners; Kurt Arrigo; Bodyworks; Malta Sailing Federation. Malta International Airport plc supports the training programme.

An 18th century battery in Qala, which is nearing the end of a five-year restoration job, has just got its coat of arms back.
Master mason Leli Bufajra worked through the winter to carve the missing coat of arms that once adorned the entrance to St Anthony’s Battery on Qala Point, overlooking the straits of Comino. He used a two-metre block of hard stone chosen from a Gozo quarry to carve the coat of arms of Grand Master de Vilhena and the cross of the Order of St John together with an inscription by the Governor of Gozo. The inscription reads: “Nel governo del Cav Fra Paulo Antonio de Viguier, 1732”.
Din l-Art ń¶elwa has been restoring the battery since 2007 in a joint project with the Qala local council with funds from the Malta Environment and Planning Authority derived from planning gains. Both the local council and the NGOs have also chipped in through their restoration funds.
The work on the battery, which had been left in total abandon with decayed and crumbling walls, is at an advanced stage. It is expected to be ready to receive visitors this summer.

Carnival Weekend Over In Gozo

Cic has to lay claim to anything worth climbing into!

Our neighbour cooked us one of her delicious pies made with the local fresh ''Gbejniet'' (goat's cheese)

Work progressed well on our house renovation and I got through alot of jobs that needed concluding. One of them is applying the mosaic to the bathroom mirror (above). Happy to say that the house is now in a position to receive the rest of the furniture back next weekend. Still not ready but very close now.
It has become tradition now that during Carnival the local lads convert their farm tractors into a mobile full blast mobile disco with decoration on their little carts. Unfortunately it was raining so their decoration was covered with plastic for protection. Note the cart is not a cart but half a car!

Above: Not quite sure why they are towing a boat.............incase of flooding maybe!
