Rough Sea and Damage in Ghar Lapsi, Malta

The above are some pics taken this morning by my brother/sister-in-law of the damage done to the boathouses during the storm last night which hit Ghar Lapsi head on. The sea was already dying down at this point - it must have been pretty scary during the night.

Swell from Last Night

1st/inner reef - the waves earlier this morning were much bigger and lovely to watch on this reef

The second/outer reef. Pretty tame compared to some of the waves during a Grigal (NE).

The sea must have been pretty big outside the bay for a swell to build up from a southerly direction and actually come into the bay. This morning there were some lovely waves breaking and the first reef actually looked better than the 2nd. I took these a few hours later and the swell was already going down by that time. The air has been really hazy too - not sure if it is just salt spray filling the air or dust from the desert but visibility is not very good.

How Idiotic can some People be??

The entrance to San Francisco bay is pretty well known for its dangerous currents, rip tides and conditions in general. You can do just about anything there from a relaxing canoe ride to some epic strong wind sailing/windsurfing - whatever. They even have great waves for surfing..............then you get the 'tra la la what a lovely day for sailing' yachtie who suddenly finds himself in not such a 'tra la la' situation!! Surely the cardinal rule before you go out sailing is check the weather forecast and know what you are up against in the area you are sailing in - like checking local knowledge, charts etc etc. Unbelievable the fixes people get themselves into - but having said that I know the risks some people take out here whether it is under motor power or sail power. The human race.............what a bunch of loonies!! (No offence meant to anyone here - oops!)

Wind - to be or not to be!

Well so far Windfinder is totally wrong - but it's still early. Just hoping the wind will shift a bit more Easterly cos right now it is dead South which couldn't be worse.

Looks like a good week windwise but rain also forecast which tends to muck up the wind alot.

Fingers crossed!

Easterly on the Way

Looking at the long range forecast on Windfinder we are in for a couple of days of Easterlies. Fingers crossed and I will definitely be going out this time!

How The Economy of Malta Functions - Hilarious!

I received this really funny email the other day - such a good description of Malta and Gozo!!

Times are tough in Malta, everybody is in debt, and everybody lives on credit. On this particular day a rich tourist who has just arrived, stops at a small village hotel and lays a €100 bill on the desk saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one to spend the night. As soon as the man walks upstairs, the owner grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher. The butcher takes the €100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the €100 and heads off to pay his bill at the supplier of feed. The guy at the Farmer's Co-op takes the €100 and runs to pay his debt to the local prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her "services" on credit. The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the hotel owner. The hotel proprietor then places the €100 back on the counter so the rich traveler will not suspect anything. At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, picks up the €100 bill, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, pockets the money, and leaves town.No one produced anything. No one earned anything. However, the whole village is now out of debt and now looks to the future with a lot more optimism. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how The Maltese islands are conducting business today.
Good Day!

What I Am Missing As I Am Typing This!

Tommy getting some height with his new sail

Panorama of part of the bay

Looks like John doing a Vulcan

Gamblu in a nice area of the waves

Think that is Chris up in the air

Whilst everyone is out there enjoying the conditions I did the best I could from my 'sick bay' and opened the window and zoomed in with my camera - then cropped. Result: at least one can see a bit of the action even though the quality of the pics is not very good.
As I write this they are all out there having a great time!

Strong Westerly Gale Last Week

I took the above photos whilst in Gozo last week during the Westerly gale force winds we had. The sea was a really spectacular site - you could sit and watch it for ages, a forever changing sea with the most beautiful turquoise colours showing through the breaking waves.

Kiting Malta 3rd Jan. 2010

Above are just a few of a load of pics I took on Sunday. Planning on putting a movie/slide show together of all the footage and shots I took. Hopefully will get it up by the end of the week.
