SAN PUPULJU FARMHOUSE, GOZO

The perfect country retreat. The house emanates a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

This slide show gives you a good idea of the atmosphere Dar Ghax-Xemx has to offer the visitor.

Allison Shreeve's Bass Strait Crossing in Very Tough Conditions

Allison Shreeve has just attempted the Bass Strait crossing - that is from Tasmania over to mainland Australia (Victoria). Conditions were extra tough with 30-35 knot winds and big swell. Unfortuntately she was not able to complete it but managed a very respectful 125km of the crossing which took a very tough 9 hours - quite a feat on the same tack in those conditions for that amount of time. She had to stop the challenge after getting severe cramps and the onset of hypothermia.

The object of the whole exercise was to raise funds for CoastCare which is a society which literally 'Cares for its Coast' in Australia. Various athletes have taken upon them fund raising in the form of covering a 100km of the Australian coastline with non motorised activity. Allison managed to achieve her goal as she managed to cover 125km.

You can see some video footage and a small article relating to this on this link:

What a Great Week

Well we certainly can't complain this past week with wind every single day. Out of 6 days I have sailed 4. Didn't sail Saturday cos it was just sooo windy with all the guys over on 4m which means me on my 4m would be ridiculous. So I was official photographer for the day. Monday couldn't go down since my garage door was stuck and my equipment was inside!! Now how's that for sheer frustration!!

A variety of directions but today must have been the best day. Some really big swell outside the point and a typical good Ghallis day.

Yesterday we had a West South West so we sailed in the bay.............flat water blasting.

I am now pleasantly aching all over! What a lovely feeling!

You're There Tom - Now Sail Away!

The above is a sequence shot of one of the many back loops Tommy was trying yesterday. Photos taken by his dad - Martin. All he needs to do is just sheet out and sail away now. Tom was even trying push loops too.
Take a look at the 4th pic - how about that for strain on the mast and sail!!!
It was great fun out there yesterday. Really psyched up now for the next windy day...........hopefully in the next couple of days.

Another Good Day on the Water

Had a good sailing day today. A bit up and down at times but was planing practically all the time and nicely powered up with the 4.5m. Used the 91L Fanatic board for the first time which I really liked, then it started to look slightly iffy and so went back out on the 86L which was great too. We had a very cold wind and the sea felt very cold today (even my hands by the end). It seems we are going back to winter again!!

Hopefully will get at least one sailing day in this week.

Tommy
Well today it was really blowing and some of the gusts and squalls were extra strong! The guys were over on 4m's so I decided to stay dry and take some pics instead as I would have just been all over the place on my 4m if the others were hanging on themselves! Quite glad I did cos it was a really cold wind - today is meant to be the first day of spring but it felt more like the middle of winter here!!
First we drove down to Ghallis but then drove back to Mellieha since it felt a bit safer in the bay in such a strong wind.
Above are just some random fun shots I took.

Tommy Really Going for those Backloops

Tommy, one of our younger generation surfers here in Malta, is really going for back loops right now. Above is a sequence shot taken by his brother Bobby, also a windsurfer, last week in Ghallis.
This afternoon had a very enjoyable time out on the water. 6m sail and 86L board. Wind a bit up and down but became a bit steadier later on in the afternoon. After 2 to 3 hours got quite tired - not used to using such a big sail. Easterly with some very small waves in Mellieha Bay.

At Last An Afternoon Getting Wet!

After having had the local 'bug' that's been going around finally got some time on the water this afternoon and I enjoyed every second of it. Wind was gusty and playing around between west and south west but went down to Ghallis all the same in spite of there being no waves. Sailed out between the island and further out you could catch the wind ok. Used my Synchro 86L with the 5m sail. It was great being on the water - one with the natural elements! The weather was great with just scattered cloud, warm and sea doesn't feel cold at all at around 15C - air temp today must have been about 17C.

I strapped my GoPro to my boom and although there is really nothing on it what I did really like is looking at the sea sailing out through the island. The water is really clear and you can see the shallow bottom very clearly. Once I have downloaded it and sorted it out I will put a tiny clip up just to see the sea. We are so lucky here to have such lovely sea, and obviously at this time of year it is crystal clear.

Welcome to the Blogging World!

A friend of mine has just started a new blog focussing on her Art amongst other things. The template she has chosen has certain shades of blue which I just love.

Allison Shreeve's Bass Strait Crossing

Pic above taken by John Carter

Allison is gearing up to do the Bass Strait Crossing, but it seems she is lacking one vital thing.......her support boat. Allison is a great windsurfer who I have had the pleasure of meeting when we went to Fuerteventura some time ago.

Winter Cup Marsala, Sicily 2009

Last week some of the Maltese Young Sailors went across to Marsala in Sicily to participate in the 2009 Winter Cup. Fleets were quite large with 35 participants in the Optimist Cadet Class and 83 participants in the Optimist Junior Class.
The results of our Maltese Young sailors were:
Optimist Cadet:
6th Thomas Bonello Ghio
7th Karl Miggiani
Optimist Junior:
5th Thomas Zammit Tabona
13th Edward Fleri Soler
51st Thomas Sammut Alessi
65th Nicola Manduca
68th Alexander Esposito
And if I have calculated it correctly Nicola came 18th in the Female class.
Once again our youngsters have come away leaving a good impression on the Italian/Sicilian young racers.
