Ella Fleri Soler first female to win shield
The ninth edition of the Malta Young Sailors Club Foundation Day Regatta was held last weekend at St Paul's Bay.
As this year's regatta, annually sponsored by Gill, coincided with the 100th anniversary of the International Sailing Federation, the ISAF centenary flag fluttered alongside Gill flags on the club's terrace.
Ideal weather conditions ensured a good turnout with 18 Optimist and 10 Laser competitors providing a spectacle for onlookers at St Paul's Bay, home to the MYSC.
Even though the wind on Saturday was at times too strong for the beginners, six races were held over the weekend, with the top places being keenly contested and resulting in exciting races.
The overall winner in the Optimist Class and the holder of the Gill shield was Ella Fleri Soler, who battled for the top honours against formidable opponents, namely Sean Borg and Gabriel Pace.
Fleri Soler achieved the honour of being the first girl ever to claim the shield for overall winner. Second place went to Borg while Pace finished in third place.
Edward Fleri Soler was the winner in the Cadet Class, followed by Ryan Abela and Thomas Sammut Alessi in second and third place respectively.
In the Laser Standard, Per Sahlberg took top spot ahead of Zak Borg and Sebastian Ripard. In the Laser Radial, the title went to Peter Valentino who saw off the challenge of Simon Aquilina (second) and Christophe Podesta (third).
